Removal of amalgam/silver fillings and replacement with natural tooth colored fillings. Please note: Dr. Knight will only remove amalgam fillings and replace them with tooth colored fillings under certain conditions....
1) silver restorations are defective, worn, or cracked. This will only be done if Dr. Knight determines the filling is not too large for a replacement filling. OVERSIZED FILLINGS ARE THE NUMBER ONE REASON TEETH CRACK...causing pain on biting and/or tooth loss! If fill is too large....a crown is usually indicated instead of replacement filling. Dr. Knight feels if he is going to be responsible for the restoration.....it must be done in the correct way....or not done at all. This will be discussed at length during the initial treatment planning exam. The informed patient will then have a choice.
2) Silver fillings are unsightly/unesthetic.....particularly in front teeth where they are extremely visable. If the patient feels amalgams are unesthetic in back teeth...informed consent will be discussed and signed by the patient. (removing old fillings and replacing them will always result in a slight removal of healthy, unaffected tooth structure.) Removal of healthy tooth structure for the pure/sole reason of gaining a more esthetic result in the shadow of the mouth....where only the patient can see it....crosses into an ethically compromising situation in Dr. Knight's opinion. That is the reason for a signed informed consent from the patient before this type of amalgam replacement. |
